Switzerland to contribute 150 thousand euros for the destruction of surplus weapons and ammunition in Ukraine
30 December 2013 14:50

The Swiss Government decided to contribute 180 thousand Swiss francs (about 150 thousand euros) to the NATO Partnership for Peace (PfP) Trust Fund project to destroy stockpiles of surplus munitions, small arms and light weapons, and antipersonnel landmines in Ukraine.

This will provide an opportunity in 2014 to continue the destruction of obsolete and surplus weapons within the current (second) phase of the NATO-Ukraine Trust Fund demilitarisation project.

Financial contributions to this phase of the project were also provided by the U.S. (the project’s Lead Nation), Germany, Turkey, Ireland and Norway.

For reference: NATO Partnership for Peace (PfP) Trust Fund project to destroy munitions, small arms and light weapons (SALW), and PFM-1 landmines is intended to financially support Ukraine's efforts in eliminating 1 000 Man-portable Air Defence System missiles, 133 000 tons of obsolete munitions, 1,5 million surplus small arms and light weapons.  The Trust Fund project will be executed in four phases, over 12 years.

The second phase of the project started in April 2012 with the signing of new contracts for the destruction of weapons and munitions. 76 000 tons of munitions, 366 000 SALW, including 3 million PFM-1 landmines are planned to be destroyed.
