On January 31, 2024, the Head of the Mission of Ukraine to NATO, Ambassador Nataliia Galibarenko, participated online in the “Protection and Respect. The Role of Women for the Achievement of Peace” Forum.
In her speech, she noted that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the role of women in Ukraine has changed significantly. Thousands of Ukrainian women have taken up arms and joined the armed forces to defend the country, while others are engaged in helping the armed forces, volunteering, and advocating for Ukraine on international platforms.
Today, the number of women who have joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine to defend our country is on par with that of many NATO member states.
"The share of women in the armed forces of NATO member states ranges from 0.3% to 20%. In the United States, this figure is 17%, in the United Kingdom - 11%, in Poland - 7%, in Denmark - 8%, in Estonia - 10%. There are 9% of women in the Armed Forces. We still have a lot to strive for, but obviously, we already have a lot to be proud of," the Ambassador said.
According to the Ambassador, the diplomatic service keeps up with the general trend of increasing the role of women. Women more often get senior management positions. About 20 women ambassadors represent Ukraine in different parts of the world.
