On 9 October 2024, the first meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council Working Group on Science and Environmental Cooperation took place at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. In the event from Ukrainian side participated Denys Kurbatov, Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Grygorii Mozolevych, Director-General, Directorate of Science and Innovation, Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, from NATO side - representatives from Innovation, Hybrid and Cyber Department, headed by Jean-Charles Ellermann-Kingombe, NATO respective Assistant Secretary General.
The key topics of discussion were cooperation between Ukraine and the Alliance under the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme, the current state of Ukraine’s research environment, and priorities for future collaboration.
The Deputy Minister of Education and Science informed NATO representatives about the damage caused to Ukraine's Scientific and Research sector due to Russian aggression, the country’s key priorities in science and innovation, planned reforms in the sector, and plans for recovery and modernization after the war.
The parties also discussed ongoing projects under the Science for Peace and Security Programme involving Ukraine.
The Allies expressed their interest in cooperating with Ukraine in the scientific field and in leveraging the unique experience of Ukrainian scientists.
