NATO-Ukraine Commission at the level of Ambassadors met at NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The discussion on the issue of constitutional reform in Ukraine was chaired by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
Advisor to the President of Ukraine - Head of the Presidential Administration Main Office for Constitutional and Legal Modernization Affairs Maryna Stavniychuk informed permanent representatives of NATO Member States on the essence of constitutional reforms in Ukraine and main steps undertaken by Ukrainian authorities in this sphere.
She stressed that the main purpose of the constitutional process is to improve the Constitution of Ukraine bringing it into line with European standards, foremost in the area of human rights, democracy and the rule of law. With this in mind, the priority task of the constitutional process is to create necessary conditions for judicial reform, to establish public authorities based on the principle of mutual assistance, checks and balances. Ensuring true democracy is the key issue. Another important issue in the course of the constitutional reform is aligning the prosecution service in Ukraine with European standards.
Special attention was given to the activity of the Constitutional Assembly of Ukraine, which continues its work on preparing proposals to modernize the Constitution of Ukraine, in particular in view of the plenary meeting of the Assembly, scheduled for 21 June, which will consider the draft Concept of Amendments to the Constitution of Ukraine.
Representatives of the Allied countries welcomed Ukraine's efforts, aimed at implementing major domestic reforms, including in the context of fulfilling the criteria for signing the Association Agreement with the EU which were accorded at the sixteenth Ukraine-EU Summit in February this year.
In their speeches, the participants of the meeting stressed the importance of continued cooperation between Ukraine and NATO in the framework of the annual national programmes. The participants appreciated the NATO-Ukraine cooperation. They also confirmed their commitment to continuing partnership relations with Ukraine under the auspices of the NATO-Ukraine Commission and to deepen them through intensive contacts with Ukraine at all levels.
