Ukraine and NATO consider further actions related to the activity of pro-Russian terrorists in eastern Ukraine
26 January 2015 17:43

Security situation in the eastern regions of the country has deteriorated recently. Pro-Russian terrorists from so-called „ Donetsk People Republic” stepped up attacks not only on the position of anti-terrorist forces of the Government of Ukraine, but also on civilians.

They do not stop using heavy weapons with not-selective action, such as multiple launch rocket systems „Grad” and „Hurricane”.

The most egregious cases of terrorist attacks on civilians are shelling of the bus with civilians near the city of Volnovaha, shooting at the trolleybus stop in the city of Donetsk and shelling of residential areas in the city of Mariupol.

Taking account abovementioned, and in accordance with Article 15 of the Charter on a Distinctive Partnership between Ukraine  and NATO, an emergency meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission took place on 26 January 2014, at NATO headquarters. From the Ukrainian side the meeting was attended by Head of Mission of Ukraine to NATO, Ambassador I.Dolhov and Deputy Secretary of the NSDC of Ukraine M.Koval.

During the meeting the situation in the theater of events was discussed, the possible further steps of Kremlin and the pro-Russian terrorists in eastern Ukraine were analyzed.

All participants of the meeting strongly condemned the actions of pro-Russian terrorist from „Donetsk people's republic” and „ Lugansk people's republic” and first of all their attacks on civilians and the Kremlin aggressive policy. Allies once again strongly urged Russia to stop supporting terrorist with finance, modern heavy weapons and human resources and urged Moscow to return to the negotiating table.

The North Atlantic Alliance member-state underlined that international community will give an adequate response on further Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Following the meeting, NATO Secretary General J.Stoltenberg made a statement.
